Gas Safety
We have a legal duty to carry out an annual check of all your gas appliances, flues and fittings.
This must be done once a year and we will always try to arrange this work at a time that is convenient to you.
Play your part by allowing us in to carry out checks.
As part of your annual gas safety inspection, our qualified and registered engineers check all smoke alarms in your home along with a gas cooker. If your cooker is unsafe at time of inspection it will be condemned and taken out of use.
In communal areas within apartment blocks we conduct regular fire safety checks of alarm systems and emergency routes to ensure you can exit your home safely in the event of a fire. We also work closely with the local authority and the fire service to assess all the risks of fire safety to ensure we keep you safe.
What you must do?
Allow access for the engineer once a suitable day and time is agreed (as these tests have to be carried out by law if access is not given, you could face legal action). Make sure you employ a suitably qualified ‘Gas Safe’ registered engineer when installing your own gas cooker. You can check the www.gassaferegister.co.uk website for more details.
What to do if you smell gas
If you think you smell gas, then immediately call Wales & West Utilities on 0800 111 999 for free. They are available 24 hours a day all year round and will send out an engineer to check your property for safety. Wales & West Utilities also provide the following tips to ensure your own safety:
- Call 0800 111 999 immediately.
- Switch off all your gas appliances (including the gas meter but only if it isn’t located in a cellar or basement).
- Open all windows and doors.
- Do not use any electrical appliances.
- Do not smoke.
- If there is a smell of gas in the cellar or basement wait outside or with a friend or neighbour.
You can visit https://www.wwutilities.co.uk/services/smell-gas/ to follow a step-by-step guide for the whole reporting process and to see what further advice is available.
Carbon Monoxide Safety
Carbon monoxide is a gas that can be produced by poorly maintained or badly serviced appliances served by gas, wood, coal and oil. These are fuels which can be found in your home as they are used in boilers, open or gas fires, water heaters, and solid fuel appliances. Carbon Monoxide has sometimes been called ‘the silent killer’ because you can’t see, taste or smell it and it can kill quickly.
What are the signs?
The signs of carbon monoxide in your home can include:
- Boiler pilot light flames burning orange instead of blue.
- Sooty stains on or near appliances.
- Excessive condensation in the room.
- Coal or wood fires that burn slowly or go out.
- Families suffering prolonged, flu-like symptoms.
How are we working with you to keep you safe?
We are installing carbon monoxide detectors in all homes as part of our annual gas safety check and boiler upgrade programme. If you already have a detector then it will be checked during your annual gas service.
Radon Gas
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that we cannot see, smell or taste. The gas is all around us every day and comes from the rocks and soil everywhere in the UK. The level of radon in the air we breathe is very low and poses little risk, however it can be higher within buildings. Therefore, it is important that you know how you can be affected and how we are helping to keep you safe in your home.
We take advice and guidance from industry experts such as the HSE and Public Health Wales on radon. If there is a need to monitor the radon more closely in your area, we will contact you and explain how you can help us. If you’d like to know more about more simply click on the link below and watch the short clip that explains in more detail.
Did you know?
- You’re four times more likely to die in a fire if you don’t have a working smoke alarm.
- Around half of fires in the home are caused by cooking accidents.
- At least two fires a day in the home are started by a candle.
- Faulty electrics (appliances, wiring and overloaded sockets) cause around 6,000 fires in the home across the UK every year.
